Keynote Presentation: Reimagining Property and Local Government within and Beyond Condominium (9:10 – 9:55)

Condominium produces a form of land ownership and a structure of private local government. Introduced in BC and in many other jurisdictions around the world in the second half of the 20th century, the condominium has come to dominate many urban real estate markets. Indeed, ownership within condominium is rapidly becoming the norm for those who own land within cities. This presentation reveals how condominium is changing what it means to be an owner and suggests that the impact of its structure of private local government extends beyond those who live within.

Creating Space Through Curiosity: How to Leverage the Insight Approach to Engage Conflict in the Moment (11:30 – 12:00)

In this session, we will introduce how the Insight approach views conflict as arising out of a perceived threat to something we care about. This contrasts with traditional models that view conflict as resulting from incompatible goals. Through the steps of noticing, verifying, and asking curious questions the Insight approach shows us how to get to the root of difficult interactions by leveraging curiosity to create space in our own minds and the minds of others, space that opens lines of connection and dialogue. This space generates new ways of knowing and possibilities for deciding that help us re-imagine our conflicts and open opportunities for connection in places of contention.

The reality for many mediators is that expertise gets in the way and has them take up more space in the conversation than necessary. In this session, we will look at why your expertise gets in the way, your personal habits that contribute to your words suffocating the space, and new approaches you can take.
